POSITION SUMMARY:
 
We are seeking a Mechanical Engineer to support procurement and maintenance of equipment used in Nano One’s cathode materials research and development facility. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of laboratory-scale and pilot-scale equipment used in materials synthesis, processing, thermal processing and characterization.
The successful candidate will work closely with materials scientists, chemists, technicians and maintenance team to support experimental programs, troubleshoot mechanical systems, and improve equipment reliability.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Laboratory Equipment Maintenance
  • Own the mechanical performance, upkeep, and reliability of R&D lab equipment, including:
- furnaces and calcination systems
- mixers, mills, and powder-handling equipment
- reactors, drying systems, and thermal processing tools
  • Support maintenance for routine inspections, preventative maintenance, and mechanical troubleshooting
  • Identify opportunities to improve reliability, maintainability, and operational efficiency
  • Coordinate equipment installation, commissioning, modification, and decommissioning

Design & Engineering Support
  • Design or modify mechanical components, fixtures, and lab-scale systems to support new experiments or process improvements
  • Build the design criteria for mechanical equipment
  • Write and apply requests for quotes (i.e.: RFQ), technical sheets (i.e. data sheets) as well as plans and specifications
  • Review equipment specifications, drawings, and layouts to ensure suitability for R&D use
  • Liaise with procurement team on external vendors, service providers, and equipment manufacturers as needed
  • All of the above to be done in collaboration with the Nano Engineering team
  • Maintain up-to-date factory documentation in collaboration with the Asset Manager

Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure equipment operation aligns with safety requirements, standard operating procedures, and environmental controls
  • Support hazard reviews related to mechanical systems, high-temperature equipment, powders, and pressurized systems
  • Assist with development and maintenance of equipment SOPs and maintenance documentation

Collaboration & Continuous Improvement
  • Work closely with R&D team to understand experimental needs and operational challenges
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues in real time to minimize downtime
  • Liaise with Nano Engineering team to share lessons learned, continuously improve processes and equipment
  • Manage internal and external stakeholders during the installation, start-up and testing of mechanical equipment in the factory

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline
  • P. Eng certification and 10+ years of experience working with industrial, laboratory, or pilot-scale equipment
  • Strong hands-on mechanical aptitude with the ability to diagnose and resolve equipment issues
  • Experience with various project deliverables (e.g. PFD, P&ID, GA drawings and factory mechanical drawings)
  • Knowledge of CAD, AutoCAD, Inventor, Navisworks, Solidworks or other 3D modeling software
  • Experience with thermal systems, rotating equipment, material handling, or process equipment
  • Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong troubleshooting skills
  • Comfortable working in hands-on, experimental environments
  • Strong documentation and communication skills
  • Ability to balance structured engineering practices with the pace and flexibility of R&D work
  • Collaborative and responsive to evolving technical priorities
  • Ability to work safely in a laboratory or industrial R&D environment
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs

Additional Assets:
  • Experience supporting equipment in materials science, battery materials, chemical processing, or powder-based manufacturing environments
  • Familiarity with furnaces, kilns, or high-temperature processing equipment
  • Experience supporting R&D or pilot-scale operations (as opposed to purely production environments)
  • Working knowledge of maintenance planning, spare parts management, or CMMS systems

Compensation

$100,000.00 - $140,000.00 per year
